Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is a type of allergy that mainly affects the nose and eyes. It occurs when the immune system overreacts to pollen from trees, grasses, weeds, or other plants.
This causes sneezing, itchy eyes, rashes, or even trouble breathing.
Hay fever is typically seasonal and occurs when the plants that release pollen are in bloom.

Allergic rhinitis, often called hay fever, is an allergy that makes your nose and sometimes your eyes feel itchy and sneezy when you’re around things like pollen, grass, or plants.
These symptoms are usually caused by your immune system reacting to pollen from trees, grasses, or weeds. This reaction is more common in spring, summer, and autumn when these plants release pollen.
Allergies and colds can have similar symptoms like sneezing and a runny nose. But with allergies, you might also have itchy eyes and the symptoms can last as long as you’re exposed to the allergen (pollen, for example). Colds usually clear up in a week or so.
Our doctors may prescribe antihistamines, nasal decongestants which can help with sneezing, itching and runny nose.
Simple measures like keeping your living area clean, using air purifiers, and keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons can help. Saline nasal sprays might also provide relief by keeping your nasal passages moist.
While allergic rhinitis itself is not usually serious, unmanaged symptoms can affect your quality of life. In some cases, chronic nasal congestion might lead to other issues like sinus infections.
